Frequently Asked Questions

Do you rent kimonos for Jiu-Jitsu classes?
Yes! We offer kimono (gi) rentals for most sizes at $5 per session. If you’re training multiple days, we ask that you return the kimono after each session so it can be cleaned for the next use.

Do you offer both gi and no-gi classes?
Yes, we do. Our weekly schedule is as follows:

  • Gi training: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday

  • No-gi training: Thursday and Friday

  • Open Mat sessions are typically gi, but many students are open to rolling in no-gi as well.

How early should I arrive before class starts?
We open our doors 10–15 minutes before class begins. That’s plenty of time to get changed, settled, and ready to train.

What should I do if I arrive and another class is still running?
It’s common to arrive while another class is in session. Please keep noise to a minimum out of respect. You're welcome to use the restrooms and backpack storage area, or wait in the spectator area where we have sofas available. You’re also invited to observe the class until yours begins.

Where can I change, and is there a shower available?
We kindly ask that you use the restrooms to change. Since we have many young students and female practitioners, this ensures a respectful and comfortable environment for everyone.
At this time, shower facilities are not available for use before or after class.

What is the dress code at Bocas Fight Gym?
All students are required to wear a rashguard under their gi. If you don’t have one, a T-shirt or tank top is acceptable.

  • Men: No shirtless training.

  • Women: Sports bras must be covered.

While some gyms have looser rules, we prioritize hygiene and mutual comfort within our community.

How should I introduce myself if it’s my first class?
Professor Alex is usually finishing the children's class when adults begin to arrive. If you’re new and unsure how to approach, don’t feel intimidated. Once the kids’ class ends, simply say hello to the professor—he’ll be happy to guide you on where to change and how to line up.

What is the martial arts environment like at Bocas Fight Gym?
We follow a traditional martial arts atmosphere rooted in respect and discipline. You’ll notice customs such as:

  • Removing shoes before entering the mats

  • Bowing onto the mat

  • Lining up by belt rank

  • Thanking your training partners at the end of class

We believe in fostering a respectful and focused training space for all.

Can I join if I’ve never trained Jiu-Jitsu before?
Absolutely! Beginners are welcome. However, please note that you may join a class mid-week that builds on techniques from earlier in the week. If that’s the case, the instructor will help tailor your experience—for example, focusing on the first technique only.

If group settings feel intimidating at first, you’re welcome to arrange a private class with the professor. Just use the contact form to inquire.

Why should I train Jiu-Jitsu or Taekwondo? What are the benefits?
Martial arts training brings a wide range of benefits:

  • Confidence & Discipline

  • Physical fitness & coordination

  • Mental clarity & strategy (especially in Jiu-Jitsu, which many compare to chess)

  • Community & personal growth

Whether your goal is self-defense, fitness, or self-development, martial arts will support you mentally, physically, and emotionally.
